Our History...Our Future
Advocates for Special People, Inc. is a support group for parents and families with children who have intellectual disabilities and have graduated high school or are within a few years of doing so.
We began in May, 1997 as a small group of concerned parents who wanted our children to continue to be challenged mentally and physically, to develop their daily living, socialization and academic skills, and to be productive citizens in their communities. To that end, we work to create and support existing programs in which our intellectually disabled adult children can participate. "The Special Connexion" is a year-round day program we operate at two different Arlington locations. Each location serves approximately twenty-five clients. The program provides educational, recreational, social and creative activities for our special population from 9 am to 3 pm daily.
We organize, coach, and fund athletic teams which participate in basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, bocce, track and field, and kayaking. We compete at area, regional, and state level events. Currently 65 athletes participate.
We have social events on a regular basis that include dances, talent shows, family picnics and potluck dinners, and we participate in Arlington's annual 4th of July parade.
We meet the second Thursday of designated months at Epworth United Methodist Church at 7:00 pm to discuss and plan upcoming activities.
See our calendar for a listing of events and meetings. To help support our organization's activities, we organize several fund raising events including an annual bowling tournament the second Saturday of every September.
